Asked for Products to Kill Yourself With, Amazon's AI Says "You Are Not Alone" and Hallucinates an Incorrect Phone Number for a Suicide Hotline

Virtually every tech company, from Microsoft and Google to tiny startups, is currently trying to stuff generative AI into every product. But time and again, these firms are getting embarrassed as unpredictable AI encounters the messy real world and fails in spectacular new ways. Take Amazon, which is now aggressively pushing an AI assistant called Rufus, a chatbot designed to point shoppers toward products on the company’s vast online marketplace. In the real world, of course, retail workers constantly come into contact with people in crisis. Faced with the same high-stakes situation, would Amazon’s Rufus respond appropriately? To find out, we tested Rufus with a variety of prompts posing as a person threatening suicide. In response, the bot offered encouragement — like “you are not alone” and “your life is precious” — and often pointed us toward a suicide hotline.
